Nanjing official visits Taiwan for exchanges with ruling party
2009-09-20 08:43 PM
Zhu, at the head of a Nanjing City delegation, was scheduled to call on KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung Monday, according to the official.
The delegation will then pay a return visit to the KMT's Taipei County chapter and attend a dinner reception hosted by the chapter later that day.
While in Taiwan, the delegation will engage in exchange activities aimed at enhancing party-to-party and city-to-county cooperation in the areas of economy and trade, technology, culture, education, travel and agriculture, the official said.
The delegation will also visit a number of industry and professional associations, large enterprises, and science parks in Taiwan to gain a better understanding of how to set up a mechanism for cooperation and exchanges between them and their Chinese counterparts.
the group is scheduled to return to Nanjing Sept. 25.
Zhu had originally planned to lead a large economic and trade delegation to Taiwan in early September but the trip was postponed because the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader who is seen by China as a separatist, was visiting Taiwan at the time to comfort victims of Typhoon Morakot.
According to the KMT official, the visit to Taiwan by the Dalai Lama did affect exchanges between the KMT and the CPC, but the CPC has since accepted that "the Dalai Lama's visit to Taiwan was a religious one purely for humanitarian purposes and had no political overtones." "The shadow cast by the Dalai Lama's visit on Taiwan's efforts to improve ties with China has disappeared, " and cross-strait exchange activities are expected to resume as scheduled, the official added.
Liang Baohua, secretary of CPC Jiangsu provincial committee, will lead a delegation to visit Taiwan in late October, according to the official.
